Constantine IV Mosaic(Sant’Apollinare)

Constantine IV Mosaic https://cmc.byzart.eu/items/show/21166/

This 7th century mosaic shows the Roman Emperor Constantine IV alongside his brothers Tiberius and Heraclius and his son Justinian II, granting privileges to the Archbishop of Ravenna and his envoy. It is located inside Sant’Apollinare in Ravenna. If one looks at this mosaic, the sides look similar to Theodora’s mosaic border, as well as having curtains in the background. However, the mosaic figures of the Emperor and his companions are of notably inferior quality to the mosaics of Justinian and Theodora. They look far less realistic, most likely due to the diminished financial circumstances of the times compared to the age of Justinian.

The mosaic is surrounded by beautiful mosaics, arguably of a higher quality than the Constantine IV mosaic itself
