The Sarcophogus Lid of Emperor Manuel I Komnenos (1750)

In 1750 at the Topkapi palace in Constantinople a great discovery was made. It was likely the unique seven-domed sarcophagus lid from the 12th century tomb of Manuel Komnenos. Cyril Mango wrote: “this is almost certainly the tomb of Manuel.” Sadly all we have is a drawing! But I find this episode very interesting, is frustrating it is not available to see at a museum or something.

We know that Manuel was laid to rest in Pantokrator, the Komnenian monastery. He was buried under a stone sarcophagus lid ‘which was parted into 7 pinnacles’ (Choniates).” It’s a very plausible identification I wonder where it ended up, maybe buried again somewhere in Istanbul?
